Kitchen Window Disk
Colorado. Mid 1990's. 6,500' elevation. Early Summer - mid morning.
I was standing about fifteen feet away, just inside the living room, when my mother loudly stammered something in alarm from the kitchen where she had been standing at the sink.
I turned to see what had happened and whether she was okay.
"I'm fine!" She reassured. "It just surprised me!"
"What did?" I asked, now beside her.
"The thing..." she gestured. "The thing that came flying at the window..."
"What kind of thing? What did it look like?" I asked, aware of my mother's lifelong history with what many might consider unusual or 'paranormal' interactions, including visual and sometimes physical contact with vaporous as well as physical apparitions.
Once, while we were living in an old farmhouse, she had turned away from the decades old, hand-operated kitchen water pump to see a long deceased former occupant (a matriarch's son who had helped build the house) standing behind her, leaning back against the stove, arms folded, just looking at her as clear as if he were a neighbor stopping by for a quick chat... until he grew transparent and slowly faded from sight.
There were many such instances. Her energy stopped expensive watches in their tracks... Timex was the only brand she could wear that 'kept on ticking'.
"I don't know," she said, "it was like… a saucer-type thing."
"Where did it come from?"
"Straight out of the north... over the ridge and the trees, I guess. It was coming straight at me across the yard. I just saw it for maybe a second before it turned. I thought it was going to come straight through the window!"
"Where did it turn? And, how did it turn? Sharp? Did it bank?"
"It turned west. Just kind of banked and curved right, just before it hit the house. And I mean just before!"
"Did it slow down to turn?"
"I don't think so. If it did, it wasn't much..."
"How fast was it going?"
"Super fast! I didn't even have time to move out of the way, then it was gone."
"How big was it?"
"I don't know, pretty small, maybe three or four feet across... The thing looked huge, though, right out the window!"
As it had been an apparent near miss, she was still startled recalling the event.
'What color was it? Light? Dark?"
"Pretty dark."
"Smooth? Any features?"
"Pretty smooth I guess. Just a saucer."
I walked outside to see if any physical evidence existed along the exterior of the house or among the rose bushes atop the flanking stone wall...
...nothing discernable on casual examination.
And that was that...
Coincidental occurrence, or presented for her to see? We are left to ponder... just one more among many such mysterious encounters during my own lifetime.
Many more of which would follow.
All of which I would seek to understand as an elusive component of both science and spirit, which in my opinion, are very much one in the same.
